Sunday March 2 – Clean up Australia Day

OFF cleaned up 2 sites this year: Lime Kiln Bay Wetlands and Poulton Park

Over 90 volunteers gathered at the two sites with a large range of  hardworking residents, dedicated Girl Guides, Scouts, Bushcarers, Project Penshurst, Georges Riverkeeper, Oatley Lions and many others, including OFF members of course, all contributing to the success of the day.

It was also good to see Georges River Council reps, including Deputy Mayor Nancy Liu, Councillor Oliver Dimoski, Councillor Natalie Mort, Councillor Matt Allison, and Councillor Peter Mahoney: setting a great example.

Volunteers collected a staggering 70 bags of rubbish and recyclables, including unusual items like surfboards, kayaks, soccer balls, and even building materials (including asbestos). The amount of debris collected was a stark reminder of the ongoing need to protect the Georges River. So, although it was a great effort, and a testament to the spirit of teamwork and community, it is also very disappointing that there is this amount of rubbish still being discarded in our environment and finding its way into our river.

However, a big “thank you” to all the fabulous volunteers who gave up their Sunday morning to make a difference in an awesome community event.
