Vanessa McPherson and Michael Gillings are members of the Environmental Microbiology and Molecular Analysis (EMMA) Laboratory in the School of Natural Sciences, at Macquarie University. This laboratory concentrates on the origins and dynamics of genetic diversity, and how such analyses can inform conservation, health, environmental management, and evolutionary biology.
Most of the core work in the laboratory examines microbial diversity in various environmental compartments. They have used molecular techniques to investigate a range of organisms, from marsupials and insects, to native and agricultural plants, down to fungi and bacteria in soil or water.
